If one starts googling terms “AI”, “ML” and “economics” together she is likely to find a lot of research and theories on potential impact of rise of AI on growth, employment and society in general but actually surprisingly little on attempts to harness the power of ML to study economy itself. One of the rare exceptions is Microsoft Alice Project established in 2016 with the exact goal in mind, which I had when launching this group. And they already produce some interesting papers like the one below from Dec 2017 that focuses on notorious ML interpretability problem and tries to blend econometrics with ML. So for someone interested in the topic it’s definitely makes sense to add Alice page to her browser favorites and track the work of people there.
