Yet another important story from “If you give anything bad data, it’s going to give you a bad answer” book. But it’s also about the fact that we often don’t like and cannot agree to the story impartial data is telling us, and about many more.

Individual rational data-driven choices are all too often irrational and harmful on the level of the society. And of course, in social sciences any slight bias in group behavior is picked up by “rational” data-driven agents and amplified many times nearly instantly and usually for worse.

The society so far cannot be entirely data-driven and the problem goes far beyond equality or what authors had in mind. At the end it will always be political and arbitrary. For the reason that we don’t just want to know the true story of our lives, we always want the better story.
